Updated Language Data for our Medicaid Population

Want to know more about the language profile of your service area? The Highmark Wholecare Quality Improvement and Health Equity Department and the Data Analytics team collect and review data from several sources to assist in determining the language characteristics and patterns of Highmark Wholecare’s service area and our membership to determine the cultural adequacy of services provided. This information is also used to anticipate and plan for changes in the language services Highmark Wholecare provides to our population. Highmark Wholecare assess the population’s language profile at least annually, using direct reporting from DHS, member health risk assessments, and Pennsylvania state census/community-level data. The language profile of Highmark Wholecare’s membership is reflective of our service area, as shown in the data below.

DHS Enrollment Data

  • 309,238 or 92.64% of Highmark Wholecare members report speaking English.
  • 17,376 or 5.21% of Highmark Wholecare members report speaking Spanish.
  • All other languages were reported as less than 1%.
  • Besides the overall number of Highmark Wholecare members changing between 2022 and 2023, the language profile data of the membership remained static and relatively unchanged.

  • 10,787,386 or 87.7% people speak only English.
  • 694,720, or 5.6% of people speak Spanish.
  • All other languages reported are below 1% of the service area population.
